Comments: For many years we have seen in our culture remnants of Jewish culture, the kosherness of killing an animal, not eating pork, or" forbidden animals, lighting "velas" with prayers., especially on Sabbott.so many things..the inquistions that took place in Spain were real, our people came here, some did not make it because the hunters followed them...the Catholic orders sent by the King & Queen of Spain..they were not good people... After visiting Israel, we know what blood cries out in our veins. There are rare documents to prove who we are. I have traced my roots to Portugal on one side of the family. Our hope is to make Aliyah to Israel in the future and embrace the culture we lost. Shalom, alakeyem--peace and a blessing

Comments: Greatly exagerated I would say. I have researched my family back many generations here in New Mexico and have found no proof of any Jewish blood. But it does seem to be the rage, especially with women.

Comments: The sephardic jews have a history. The Lord preserved his special remnant in the New Spain, the territory of Mexico, which is now New Mexico. It is sad that some researchers can not see the pictures. What happened to the "Sangra Judea" manuscript used my the King and Queen during the expulsion? It had all the surnames, many now have been changed. Do you need physcial proof or devine proof? I, a proud Hispanic-Indian Jewish woman, know the later.

Comments: Devine Proof! Get real, what is that. When researching family you need physical proof. There is no proof, that I am aware of, that there were Jews in New Mexico prior to the early 1800's when they came in via Missouri.

But I have found references and rumors that it may have been a Jewish name. Many Spanish Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism. Some of these men were with the Conquistadors. DNA is the best proof!

Comments: I have looked and looked, and there is much speculation and guessing. I have just finished reading 2 books on Jews in New Mexico. One states that there were none prior to the early 1800's and the other states that it can't prove or disprove that they were here prior and that they "may" have come north with Don Juan de Onate. Went to some of the websites listed above. And the ones I read make some unfounded claims. Reminds me of the Mormon folks claiming that Native Americans are one of the lost tribes of Israel. The method of research is intended to prove an outlook that they have and all research is geared toward that end. Interesting reading, but not proof. It is with some sadness that I see our ancestors being morphed from Spanish and/or Spanish/Indian to Jews. I think it is very possible that some Jews who had accepted the Catholic faith made it to what is now New Mexico. But that does not make us Jewish.

Comments: How does DNA test for religion? Might come out Semetic ancestry, but odds are Semetic ancestry in Spanish folk is probably Arab not Jewish. Remember the Arabs were in Spain for hundreds of years.

Comments: The idea that New Mexico was settled by crypto jews is not reasonable or logical. However, take comfort in the fact that Jews lived on the Iberian Pennisula since pre Roman days, which means we all probably have a little Jewish blood in us. Read a book by accepted scholars (not travelling oraters with a "vision"), and don't quote Internet sites as the absolute truth.
