Place - opening screenPlace in New Mexico history includes counties, communities, land grants, the Camino Real, and New Mexico's literary landscape. It will eventually include other categories, such as mountains, rivers, or migration routes. Click Place to explore this section of the site.

Use your mouse to click Counties, Communities, Land Grants, Camino Real or Literary Map. If you are interested in learning about a particular county, click the Counties link: the outlines of the counties appear on the map of New Mexico. As you move your mouse over each county, it will be highlighted and its name appears. Click the name of the county you are interested in to view a list of documents relating to this county. Place - CountiesClick a title from the list to view its summary and thumbnail image. To view a popup window with the full document text and an enlarged image, click the "more" link. To close the popup window and return to the list of documents about that place, click "close window."

To learn more about a specific community, click the "Communities" link: red squares representing the location of each of the communities currently in the database, appear on the map. Move your mouse over a square and the name of that community appears. Place - Communities You can also zoom in on a specific portion of the map by selecting 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x. Click 1x to return to the full map. Click a square to view a list of documents relating to that community. Click a title from the list to view its summary and thumbnail image. To view a popup window with the full document text and an enlarged image, click the "more" link. To close the popup window and return to the list of documents about that place, click "close window." To view a different community, click its name on the map.

Please note that students at New Mexico Highlands University have done some wonderful projects on specific land grants; to view these projects click the related resources link at the bottom of the "more" popup.

To explore communities and parajes (campsites) along the historic route El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, or Royal Road, click "Camino Real," and follow instructions for Communities.

Place - Camino RealTo learn about how New Mexico has captured the imagination of storytellers for centuries, click "Literary Map," and follow instructions for Communities.

After exploring New Mexico places, you can return to the four themes: place, time, people, and story.

The top right-hand side of this page allows you to navigate the site. You can click the word "themes" listed on the top navigation bar or click one of the four themes in the sub-navigation. Place - Camino RealOr you can explore the site in the various other ways listed in the navigation bar and on the site map: themes, documents, calendar, discussion, and contact. All of these areas are designed to encourage a dialogue with New Mexico history.

In the html version, click one of the links Counties, Communities, Land Grants, Camino Real or Literary Map. An alphabetical list of related place names appears. Click a place name; it appears on the map along with a list of related documents. Click "more" and a popup window opens with additional information and an enlarged image. Click "close window" to return to the main map interface and explore another document about that place, or learn about another place. Or you can exit the place section by clicking another theme (time, story or people) or another part of the website (Discussion, Calendar, Resources or About Us).
